[17] Echizen Washi Paper-Making Tools |
Across from the Million Pagodas and Dharani Sutra, you can learn about the tools used by Echizen's washi paper makers long ago.
Here, you can see many tools and products that were donated to the Paper & Culture Museum by paper makers and dealers in paper-producing areas, as well as items collected by Echizen city and organizations like the Echizen Washi Industry Cooperative Society. Some items on display here are periodically changed out; through many years of paper-maker spirit, extending back to ancient times, the collection has grown to some 2,523 items.
While it is impossible to see the entire collection in a single visit, the production tools are organized by the step of production they are used for: the frames and mats used for shaping the paper, the many metal dies and molds used for different types and sizes of paper, rulers used to measure that feudal domain banknotes were the proper size, and other rare and precious items.
