[05] Hands-On Paper-Making Course |
With a staff member instructing, even beginners can easily make their own paper here. If you're interested, just let our reception desk know.
Steps of the Hands-On Course |
Paper-Forming |
Use the Suki-keta, paper-forming frame to scoop paper pulp out of a large tub, then shake it all around. Shaking it around helps even out the thin white fibers that the paper is made of.
The frame you'll use for our hands-on course is smaller than the ones used by professionals — professional paper makers have the skills needed to use larger frames and produce paper with even thickness throughout, even very thin paper.

Decorating with Pressed Flowers |
Artistic washi paper made in Echizen features a number of different techniques for mixing things like plants into the paper itself. We're prepared pressed flowers that you can add to your paper, letting you decorate your artistic paper however you'd like. The technique used here is different from the traditional techniques, but it's still beautiful. Once you've placed the flowers how you like, let a member of the staff know, and they will put them in place permanently for you.
Dyeing |
There are many types of Echizen washi paper, and there are many different techniques used to make colorful artistic paper. Here, you can add some color to your paper by using one of the simplest dyeing techniques or by sprinkling on some gold powder. There's no way to start over, though, so work carefully, bit by bit.
Suction-Drying |
Echizen's professional paper makers use traditional techniques to press the moisture out of dozens of sheets of freshly made paper at a time. Here, a member of our staff will help you out as you use a machine to suck the moisture out of your paper.
Air-Drying |
Finally, a member of the staff will take your washi paper to another room to air-dry. After about ten minutes of drying, your one-of-a-kind washi paper will be finished. The paper you made will be available to pick up from the reception counter once it's dry, so why not browse the Washi-Dokoro Echizen washi paper shop while you wait? |
